To those of us who follow New Mexico politics, the decision of Senator Dede Feldman to not seek re-election to her “safe” Democratic seat was a complete surprise. What was shocking were the “insider” blog posts that Feldman, who was a leading voice on health care, open government and education, was quitting because she had been frozen out of the system. If one of the most prominent Democratic Senators cannot move a Democratic agenda forward when the Democrats control the legislature, then how does the legislative process really work? (i.e. doesn’t the majority control the Legislature?). We will talk with Senator Feldman about her reasons for leaving the Senate, how significant a role she was able to play in the legislative process (with 16 years of seniority and as Chair of the Public Affairs Committee), and learn about the inner workings of the Legislature including the all important Legislative Finance Committee. Finally, we will also speak with Senator Feldman about the Richardson years and whether Governor Martinez, who is routinely mentioned as possible Vice-Presidential candidate, is ready to serve as President of the United States.
